If you are planning to take the exam at your school, your instructor will provide more information about the testing date and time.

If you are planning to take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center, you will schedule your own exam once you receive an official letter from AMT with instructions on how to proceed.

  • Schedule your exam at www.pearsonvue.com/amt as far in advance as possible to ensure that your preferred time, date and location is available. You may also call Pearson at 1-888-846-6941. DO NOT CALL AMT TO SCHEDULE YOUR EXAM.
  • Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled administration time
  • If you need to cancel or reschedule, you must do so at least 24 hours (1 business day) in advance with Pearson VUE. DO NOT CALL AMT TO RESCHEDULE YOUR EXAM.
  • Note: If you arrive late, cancel an exam less than 24 hours of your scheduled time, or do not show up at all, you will need to reschedule your exam for another day/time and pay a retesting fee to AMT.

If you are testing at a Pearson VUE testing center, you may contact them directly regarding the acceptability of your forms of identification: 1-888-846-6941.

This video link covers all the security measures that you may encounter when they test at a Pearson VUE test center.

When you take your exam online at either an approved school testing site or a Pearson VUE testing site, you will know your score immediately. This score is transmitted to AMT within 24 – 48 hours. If it is a passing score, you will receive in the mail, in 7-14 days, a new member packet with your official certificate and information on how to maintain your certification. You will also be able to download your digital membership card from “My Homepage”.

However, if your application is still awaiting any documents, the new member packet and certificate and digital card will not be available until all documentation is received, reviewed and processed to ensure your application is complete.
Please note that you are not considered certified until you receive official documentation from AMT.

If you receive a failing score, please follow the retesting procedures listed below under "Retesting Information".

Once certified, you will be asked to pay a nominal fee in order to keep your certification and membership current. Every three years you will be required, through the Certification Continuation Program (CCP), to submit an attestation that you have acquired a specific number of continuing education credits relevant to your certification specialty.

Applicants who have failed the exam and wish to retest must contact AMT.
  • Scheduling a retake is permitted NO SOONER THAN 45 Days from date of the previous attempt
A non‐refundable re-testing fee is required for each additional attempt of the certification examination.

Examination Retake Form

Because performance is evaluated with respect to all content areas, failing candidates who choose to retake the test are required to retake the entire examination. Candidates can retake the examination three additional times after the first failure, up to a total of four (4) times, for that certification. After failing any test, it is recommended that candidates study all areas in which mastery of the material was not achieved (as indicated on a failing score report) before reattempting a test.

Applicants are limited to a lifetime of four examination attempts for any one AMT certification.

Consult the Prepare for Exam Resources to prepare for your examination retake

If your application has expired during the course of retesting, you may need to submit a new application, and pay the appropriate application fee, in order to continue the retesting process. If that is the case, an additional retesting fee would not be necessary.
