President's Message

Dear West Virginia AMT Members,

The WV Board of Directors have been very busy planning the Spring Scientific and Business Meeting to be held April 4, 2020 at the Pierpont Advanced Technical Center near I79 off Exit 132 in Fairmont. I am so grateful to our WVSSAMT members and Pierpont administration/faculty Michael, Melissa, and Sherri for allowing us to hold our scientific and business meetings in their state-of-the-art facility. We are currently lining up our speakers – scientific topics discussed include Nephrology, Information Technology, Midwifery, Cardiology, Living a Healthy Lifestyle, and Legislative Issues in WV. In addition to our educational and business meetings, we also will provide a hot lunch. At the business meeting following the educational sessions, we will be electing officers and board members for the next two years. A donation of any amount to the newly formed WVSSAMT Student Scholarship fund grants you access to the meeting. A complete list of topics and meeting agenda will be sent out in early March 2020. Mark your calendars NOW so you don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to earn your CEUs, and network with AMT members in your state.

Speaking of our student scholarship, WVSSAMT will be awarding its first student scholarship this fall. The winner will be announced in the first part of November. In addition to the scholarship award, WVSSAMT will also provide an assistor fee for the winner to take the AMT exam in their respective discipline. I would like to personally thank the following contributors to our scholarship fund to date: Kitty Carr (in memory of Randy Spragg), Kimberly Cheuvront, Sherri Craddock, Janet Crigler, Rosette Richardson, Ivette Rivera, Michael Straight, Melissa White, and Deanna Wilson-Ayers. We hope that this scholarship will help further young minds in healthcare professions and encourage them to become involved in our state AMT society.

The AMT National Convention will be held July 13-17, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Be sure to read my delegate message in the newsletter to learn about this exciting week. Remember, WVSSAMT provides financial assistance to help with expenses to members in good standing that meet all delegate criteria. The national convention is a great way to network with peers all over the US and earn CE’s, along with becoming active in the national organization.

National Medical Assistants Week is being held October 21-27, 2019. This year’s theme is “Medical Assistant Week – at the Heart of Healthcare”. A great big “Thank you” to all the RMAs for all that you do to keep our patients healthy!

I am happy to announce this year’s recipient of the Mountaineer Excellence Award is Michael Waide, MT, AHI, CMLA. Michael has served WVSSAMT for two years as a Board Member, and has represented WV as a delegate to the AMT National Convention. He has also served as one of the Under 40 observers on the National Board of Directors. Read more about Michael in the article in the WVSSAMT newsletter. Congratulations, Michael!

I hope to see everyone at the Spring Educational and Business meeting on April 4th in Fairmont. We have a great professional organization and are constantly looking for new members to be involved. If you would like to serve on a state committee, please contact me at wvssamt@gmail.com. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President.

Janet Crigler, MT(AMT)
