President's Message

Hello Michigan Members

Where does time go, we had our annual AMT Educational and National Meeting in Washington DC July 1-5, 2018. Just a few weeks ago on October 5 and 6, we had the Great Lakes District Conference in West Chester Ohio.  Both were well attended and enjoyed.

Michigan was honored to sponsor the Keynote Speaker Chip Madera, MS/CSP at the Great Lakes District Conference.  Mr. Madera came highly recommended as a speaker. He did an excellent job. I hope perhaps he might speak at the National Conference someday as well. We had 16 members from Michigan attend the conference.

A special “Thank You” to Sheryl Scott, President of Ohio, and her members for hosting and working so hard to have such a great conference. All the Great Lakes Presidents worked on the event as well. We were honored to have so many AMT national board members to attend and to be speakers as well.

We are currently in the process of organizing our next scientific meetings. We plan on having another one in the spring like this year and one in the fall. Please check your email for updates.

If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Please note we are only publishing our state societies email address as a contact rather than individual email addresses:  michssamt@gmail.com. No one is immune to the hackers out there.

Patricia Dare, RMA(AMT)
MISSAMT President

Legislative News:
We were please to send a representative from Michigan, Jeffrey Lavender to the 2018 Clinical Laboratory Legislative Symposium and Congressional Visits. This event is hosted by ASCLS, and is a coalition of ASCLS, AMT, ASCP, CLMA, AGT and NSH.

Two issues that were addressed to Congress this year were:
  1. PAMA, Section 216. The clinical laboratory fee schedule that was implemented in January 2018.
  2. Clinical Laboratory Workforce. There are 12,000 new lab techs needed annually, but only 6,300 produced. There was a recommendation that the Government Accountability Organization (GAO) study this shortage and make recommendations to Congress.  Some suggestions already include clinical rotations in VA facilities, and funding within the Public Health Service Act.
Representatives from AMT meet with their states Senators and their local congressman of their district to discuss issues.

We appreciated Jeffrey going and are planning on sending a second member from our state in 2019 to represent our state and AMT.
