Dental Assistant

Dental Assistant (RDA) Applicants shall meet one of the following eligibility routes:
Applicants applying shall take and pass the appropriate AMT certification examination

Route 1: Education

Applicant shall be a graduate of, or scheduled to graduate from, an accredited dental assisting program.

Additional Requirements:
  • Accredited program: program or institution is accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or otherwise approved by the AMT Board of Directors.
  • All training programs must have been structured to include at least the following content areas:
    1) office assisting skills 2) dental sciences 3) clinical procedures and 4) dental radiography
  • Applicants seeking certification under eligibility Routes 1 and 2 must have graduated from their academic programs within the past four years. Applicants whose date of graduation is four years or more prior to the date of their application must also provide evidence of relevant work experience for at least three of the last five years.

Route 2: Military

Applicant shall have completed a military dental assisting training program AND shall have completed a minimum of one year of work experience in the dental assisting profession.

  • Applicants seeking certification under eligibility Routes 1 and 2 must have graduated from their academic programs within the past four years. Applicants whose date of graduation is four years or more prior to the date of their application must also provide evidence of relevant work experience for at least three of the last five years

Route 3: Work Experience

Applicant shall have been employed as a dental assistant for a minimum of three years (5,250 hours) and shall present a recommendation from a current or former employer who is a dentist. Proof of high school graduation (or equivalent) is required.

Note: All applicants must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, or show proof of comparable training. The date on the CPR card should be current at the time of AMT certification. If physical limitations prevent CPR certification, contact the AMT Office.
