Presidents Message

Welcome to the Maine/New Hampshire AMT State Society web page. Your elected State Society Officers and Board members for 2013/2014 have a strong commitment to AMT and to you, who make up the family of our AMT members. As your elected officers and board members we hope to hear from you and would love to hear any suggestions on how we can help support you. We are always looking for articles for the Spectrum, so please don’t feel bashful about writing an article on a topic near and dear to your heart and sharing it with your fellow members. This article could be an account of why you are in the medical profession, a research topic you may be involved in, or even just a “did you know’” interesting fact or experience you wish to share. The web site also contains information about upcoming events and meetings of interest, such as the Annual Northeast Lab Conference in October. This year it is a week earlier, Oct 15-17^th at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. So start making plans to attend this wonderful educational opportunity. Please join us for the State Society Fall Business meeting and dinner afterwards.

At our Spring Business meeting there was a discussion concerning how we can get more attendance to our meetings. We realize that we are geographically spread apart and attendance isn’t always feasible due to the distance one would have to travel. We also know we all have very busy personal lives and commitments which make it hard to attend. So the board is actively seeking a way to set up a teleconference for our meetings so you can call in and join us.

We hope to see some of you at the 75^th Annual Education Meeting and Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 7-11. All disciplines are welcomed and encouraged to attend. National Delegates were selected at our Spring Business meeting in April.

CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Certified Medical Administrative Specialist

1. Applicant shall be of good moral character.

2. Applicant shall meet one of the following eligibility routes:

ROUTE 1 (EDUCATION): Applicant shall be a graduate of, or scheduled to graduate from, an accredited medical office administrative program. ^1,2,3,4

ROUTE 2 (RMA CERTIFICANT): Applicant shall be certified as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent, and possess a minimum of two years of recent full-time experience working as a medical office administrative specialist.

ROUTE 3 (WORK EXPERIENCE): Applicant shall have been employed as a medical office administrative specialist for a minimum of five of the past seven years. Proof of high school graduation (or equivalent) is required.

3. Applicant shall take and pass the appropriate AMT certification examination.

Requirement Footnotes:

1. Accredited program: Program or institution is accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or otherwise approved by the AMT Board of Directors

2. All training programs should include a minimum of 720 clock hours (or equivalent) of didactic training in medical office administrative skills, including a clinical externship of no less than 160 hours in duration.

3. The training programs must have been structured to include at least the following content areas: 1) medical records management, 2) health care insurance processing, coding and billing, 3) office financial responsibilities, and 4) information processing.

4. Applicants seeking certification under eligibility Route 1 must have graduated from their academic programs within the past four years. Applicants whose date of graduation is four years or more prior to the date of their application must also provide evidence of relevant work experience for at least three of the last five years.
